places + spaces present Sound in Context
for Cockatoo Calling on Cockatoo Island
Free performance took place on Saturday 10 September, 2011 as part of Cockatoo Calling
Sound art installation and performance.
Pick up a cello, hit the play button on a CD or bring your own instrument
and become part of the soundscape. This is a chance to create your own
music, or immerse yourself in the soundscapes created by Russell Phillips
with Sound In Context, a week long installation culminating in a performance.
Sound in context is an immersive sound installation that ran from
Sunday the 4th of September, culminating in a performance on Saturday
the 10th of September. Over the course of the week Warehouse 15
was used as a sounding space for all things (and people) musical
and non-musical alike. A soundscape mixing the natural and mechanical
sounds of Cockatoo Island with other composed and environmental
recordings will continually transform the space.
Shape the sound experience yourself: instrumentalists bring your instruments
and improvise freely or engage with the musical suggestions provided. For
those without an instrument, various instruments and sounding objects will
be provided for you to play. If scratching out a melody on the communal
cello seems too daunting, make your way through a scattering of CD players
and press ‘Play’ to hear a bustling marketplace, the vibrating strings of a
piano or a Gregorian-style chant.
Performance featured:
Laura Altman (Clarinet)
Marcus Whale (Saxophone)
George Piper (Cello)
Suzanne Sherrington (Flute)
