ROUGH GHOSTS AND RAW TALENT

This year’s MODART, a gathering of seven emerging composers and the Song Company’s six ever-surprising vocalists under the watchful eye of Roland Peelman will be held at Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour. The MODART initiative, started in 2003 by the Song Company and the Australian Music Centre, has grown in stature and served as a model for emerging composers’ programs around the nation.
This year’s program features composers from Brisbane, Christchurch (New Zealand), Guadalajara (Mexico), Melbourne and Sydney. Selected from a wide field of applicants, the seven composers are:

Leah Barclay (Brisbane)
Tristan Coelho (Sydney)
Demian Galindo (Mexico)
Annie Hsieh (Melbourne)
Ekrem Mülayim (Sydney/Istanbul)
Timothy Tate (Brisbane)
Alex Van den Broeck (Christchurch, New Zealand)

The concerts are a culmination of the program which began with initial workshops in May this year where the composers experienced an intensive week with the Song Company. Roland Peelman states, “This is the time when ideas fly and discussions continue well beyond allocated rehearsal times. The unique nature of this project has been much commented upon and has even become the subject of academic research. Yet the importance of this composers’ forum cannot be understated, both for the development of high-quality vocal writing and for the many benefits and ongoing relationships that flow from our engagement with the best young talent around.”

Participating composer, Ekrem Mülayim states in his diary, “The feedback of the singers, coming from experience, knowledge and skill, was inspiring. Roland Peelman, succinct, knowledgeable and, quite frankly, mesmerising, leads us to question and explore, rather than state and direct us with his comments, anecdotes and analysis. So he did, subtly and cleverly, almost sneakily like a true mentor… I mean, we all know he is a genius, right?”

MODART is a biennial professional development program, providing opportunities for emerging composers to develop new work for voices. It was initiated by the Song Company and the Australian Music Centre. The concerts will be recorded live by ABC Classic FM for later broadcast.
